Little Women on tvN/Netflix has a lot to like. The show’s characters are full-bodied and intricately developed, and it’s detailed, understatedly cynical storytelling is consistently engaging.

Even with only two episodes released thus far, much has unfolded, leaving plenty of possibility for future twists and turns. With only 12 episodes total, this K-Drama could go down as one of the year’s more enticingly brief offerings if it maintains its strong momentum.

At the heart of the story are three sisters who grew up without money, confined by their working-class upbringing, but hopeful for better futures. They’re all distinct individuals in terms of their personalities, but they fit together so well as a family unit.

Individualism, on the other hand, allows all three sisters to become enmeshed in their own ordeals, which will definitely become linked as time passes, but leaves the trio facing their different difficulties alone for the time being. The eldest, In-Joo, is a marginalized office worker who is dragged into an investigation into the disappearance of 70 billion won in slush fund money following the death of Hwa-young.

In-Kyung, the middle child, has been suspended as a reporter for drinking on the job, but she is unwavering in her search for the truth about elite attorney Jae-sang’s activities in an old case that resulted in four deaths. In-hye, the family’s youngest member, is a gifted artist, which proves to be her undoing when the wealthy Hyo-rin appears.

These stories are currently separated from one another, allowing them to breathe as the characters inside them develop. The escalation of In-Joo’s personal circumstances as she navigates life from being a worker isolated from the core group to a person who lost her only companion due to the death of the enigmatic Hwa-young (a hefty windfall was afforded to the eldest of the Oh family here, however), to someone probing into what could be a labyrinthine murder case has been most fascinating.

The stakes are continuously escalated, and the information we’re given is rearranged and repackaged depending on who informs us, making us feel just as befuddled-yet-determined as the protagonist we’re watching solves problems on our behalf. Jung Seo-kyoung’s screenplays have always had a penchant for profundity, and this is no exception.

Some outstanding acting performances, particularly from the leads, have complimented the so far excellent writing. Kim Go-eun plays the aforementioned In-Joo, a lady unsure of her place in a life that is only becoming more complicated.

Kim infuses her performance with lively insecurity that works in tandem with a simmering curiosity in the office worker’s quest to discover the truth about Hwa-death. young’s Similarly impressive is the youthful Park Ji-hu, who is continuing her climb in stock after a breakout role in All of Us Are Dead, while Nam Ji-Hyun establishes herself as a solid pick for the middle child In-Kyung thanks to a performance laced with underlying vehemence.

Add to it some amazing cinematography that emphasizes the class differences between the impoverished residents and the one-percenters, which is highlighted by the program’s changing color palette, and Little Women has all the makings of a memorable show. Given that both director Kim Hee-won and writer Jung Seo-Kyung have established careers, assuming that these instruments would be used to create something truly remarkable is not a far-fetched thought.

The four March sisters endure years of privation in Louisa May Alcott’s novel Little Women, under the careful eye of their loving mother, Marmee. Their family’s financial difficulties are at least in part due to their father’s noble calling as a Civil War chaplain.

In the Korean drama Little Women, the three Oh sisters are not only poor, but they also lack a parental support structure and experience further humiliation as a result of their parent’s bad behavior.

The girls owe heaps of debt, which their father accumulated, and were recently abandoned by their inept mother. It’s hardly shocking that they’re sour. Unlike their March counterparts, these sisters do not wear their poverty with polite elegance. Poverty binds them like chains.

Kim Go-eun plays In-Joo, a gullible accountant, in this drama. In-Kyung, a determined reporter with a drinking problem, is played by Nam Ji-Hyun. Park Ji-character, hu’s In-hye, is a sensitive, artistic student who harbors secrets from her family. The young women labor hard, yet it never seems like enough. They must contend with circumstances that they did not create.

Alcott did not want to write novels for girls because such stories at the time tended to center on a feminine future in the home realm. Boys’ stories, on the other hand, were filled with adventure, intrigue, and tremendous transformations. Alcott, an outspoken feminist, disliked the work that made her famous, yet she would admire the heroines in the k-drama adaptation of Little Women.

The first episode of this drama depicts these ladies as autonomous and determined, putting them in difficult dramatic situations that they can eventually master. In-Kyung faces risks as a journalist as she pursues a corrupt politician, but she will not back down. After a friend’s strange death, office misfit In-Joo seeks answers.

Unlike Meg March in the novel, who married happily, In-Joo in the k-drama is already divorced. She learned the hard way, after marrying a dishonest man, that marriage does not ensure financial security. When she becomes entangled in a mystery, her financial future becomes even less certain.

Comparisons to the novel are unavoidable, but the k-drama adaptation already contains some surprising twists and turns.

The old theme of endurance is now set in modern-day Korea, and it includes a strange death, embezzlement, and corrupt acts by the wealthy and powerful. The “small” women must face obstacles that Alcott did not anticipate would be appropriate for a novel about girls.
