Gangubai Kathiawadi was one of the influential figures of Bombay at the time of the ’60s. She was the controversial figure whose story was documented by the journalist and author Hussain Zaidi in Mafia Queens of Mumbai’s book. Gangubai Kathiawadi was an Indian criminal, don, businesswoman, and sex worker.
Her real name was Gangubai Harjivandas. She owned a brothel house in the Kamathipura area of Mumbai. As stated in the book of Hussain Zaidi, she was forced and pushed into the business of prostitution at a very young age. She did a lot of work for the well-being of the sex workers and the orphans.
EARLY LIFE-
Her life started with the dream of becoming an actress. But unfortunately, she fell in love with his father’s accountant and eloped with her to Mumbai. She thought of living a new life with her lover and pursuing her dream. And her dream broke down when her lover sold her at a brothel for Rs.500. This was when her story of being a criminal, a sex worker, and a don began. She was raped by one of the members of Karim Lala’s gang.
To seek justice, she gathered all her courage and went to Karim Lala and pleaded a lot. Then she tied a Rakhi to Karim Lala and made him his brother. Karim Lala, too gave her Kamathipura, a land commanded by him as a gift.

She died in her house due to a cardiac arrest. But besides being a brothel lady, she is still the idol of many, and there are walls in Kamathipura that contain her pictures and posters till now.
