The creator of my favorite Spanish comedy, Day of the Beast (not on Netflix), Lex de la Iglesia, is a master of sardonic humor. This play is almost entirely set in a bar, one of Madrid’s most typical settings. An apparent apocalyptic scene is starting to play out outside when a shooting occurs at the bar’s entrance. People from all social classes who frequent the bar seclude themselves inside and argue about the various scenarios of what might be happening on the streets.

Due to the 25% increase in Spanish immigration to Germany over the previous four years, this movie about two Spanish brothers who settle there is of current significance. The sad state of language learning in Spain is also made fun of.

Affair in Spain (original title: Ocho Apellidos Vascos)

The ultimate modern Spanish comedy is this one. The narrative centers on Rafa, a young man from Seville who, after only one night with the Basque woman, develops feelings for her. When he attempts to court her in Basque Country, he is not met with the warm reception he had hoped for. Eventually, they come up with a plan in which Rafa pretends to be a Basque native.

The story may sound cliche or typical, but the humor that stems from the cultural contrasts between Andalusia and Basque Country, the two regions of Spain, plays quite well and instructs the viewer about Spanish culture. First off, the accents are quite funny; pay attention to Rafa’s hilarious impersonation of a Basque accent as well as the way he and his friends speak in contrast to Amaia and her father. Although some of these alleged cultural differences are exaggerated, I can assure you that Spanish people frequently make the same jokes.
