Chitkul is a village in the Kinnaur District of Himachal Pradesh. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Himachal. Situated 3,450 meters above sea level, Chitkul is located on the bank of the Baspa river and is the last river of the Baspa valley. Chitkul is the last place up to where one can travel without a special permit. It is very close to the China border and holds strategic importance as well. Guarded by majestic mountains, Chitkul is covered with snow during the winters, forcing the locals to move to lower regions.

How To Reach Chitkul?
The best way to reach Chitkul is via Chandigarh. Chandigarh is well connected to all the major cities of India via road, rail network, and air. The route from Chandigarh to Chikul goes through Shimla, Narkanda, and then a downhill drive from Narkanda. There are several villages between Narkanda and Chitkul. The route is as follows:
Narkanda-Rampur-Jeori-Karcham-Sangla-Rakcham-Chitkul.
It generally takes 2 days to reach Chitkul from Delhi. The entire journey will be nearly 600 km. One of the cheapest ways to reach Chitkul is by taking a bus from Shimla. Chitkul is well connected to Shimla via roads. The nearest airport is in Shimla as well.
The weather in Chitkul is cold across the year, but the winters are bone-chilling. This is why one can’t visit Chitkul during the winters. The best time to visit Chitkul is between March and September. Even during these months, the temperature often goes below 0 degrees celsius.

There are several budget-friendly options for staying in Chitkul. While planning your trip, it’s better to have a budget of Rs.1,000 to Rs. 1,500 per night for a stay in Chitkul.
Chitkul is not a regular hill station with loads of restaurants, adventure activities, quality hotels, etc. It is a secluded place in the lap of mother nature where sightseeing is the primary thing.

The 60 km long trekking route requires 12 days to be covered. However, the scenic landscapes and steep slopes make it one of the best treks in the country. Situated at an altitude of 5242 m, the trek offers jaw-dropping views of Buddhist monasteries, lovely apple orchards, and the mighty Kinner Kailash Mountain.
A day by the Baspa River:
Located on the banks of the Baspa river, Chitkul is gifted with mesmerizing natural sites. Originating from the perennial glaciers, the river is a source of crystal clear water. Passing through a mountainous route, the river makes a perfect site to camp nearby. You can sit for hours next to the river while enjoying the fulfilling view of the region. It is also one of the most picturesque places in the village.
Mathi Temple:
Mathi temple is one of the most important religious places in the region. The temple is dedicated to the local goddess. Goddess Mathi is credited for unifying the region that was divided into seven different parts. The temple is said to be at least 5 centuries old. Located on Sangla-Chitkul road, the temple is entirely made up of walnut wood. It is a beautiful temple that looks like a mix of Tibetan and traditional Himalayan architecture.
