Momos are one of the most popular fast food dishes in India. Also known as Dimsums or dumplings, Momos are prepared in different ways in different parts of the world. There are a variety of momos available in India as well. Variety doesn’t necessarily mean a difference in the procedure. It means different types of stuffings. In India, the most popular Momos is Veg momos prepared using stuffings prepared with carrot, onion, cabbage, and capsicum. You can also find Paneer and Mushroom momos in the country.
Momos are available in both steamed and fried momos. There are several other momos recipes, such as Tandoori momos, Kurkure momos, Malai momos, etc.
The general perception is that Momos is a very hard dish to prepare. However, it is not true. The process of making Momos is really simple. All it needs is a few ingredients and some practice.
Also, there is no single shape of Momo. Momos can be prepared in different shapes and sizes.

Momos Recipe:
Preparing The Stuffing:
- Heat some oil in a pan on medium flame and once the oil gets heated, add chopped ginger and garlic for flavor.
- Saute the ginger and garlic in low flame and make sure that you do not burn them.
- After the ginger and garlic turn light brown, add finely chopped onion, carrot, cabbage, and capsicum and saute them well for a few minutes.
- Once the finely chopped veggies get soft, add salt and pepper according to the state and the quantity of vegetables you are using.
- Mix the salt and pepper well, cook the veggies for a couple of minutes, add some finely chopped spring onions and soy sauce, and stir the mixture well for a minute.
- Turn off the stove and leave the mixture for a few minutes, allowing it to cool down. You can also add paneer or mushroom instead of the veggies if you want to prepare paneer or mushroom momos.
Preparing The Outer Layering
- The process to prepare the outer layer for momos is as simple as preparing a chapati. The flour generally used for preparing the outer covering of momos is all-purpose flour.
- Take some flour in a bowl as per the desired quantity, add a little water, and knead it to form a smooth dough. Cover the dough and leave it for 10-15 minutes.
- Use the dough to prepare small balls and roll them into small circles with edges thinner than the center part.
- Put a tablespoon of stuffing at the center of and lift one side of the edge of the small circle and join all the other edges to make a closed shape with stuffing inside it.
- Once your momos are prepared, you can steam them for 5 to 6 minutes. Another alternative is to deep fry them.
Momos are served with a special red chutney made from red chili and garlic. Apart from the red chutney, Momos is also served with mayonnaise.
Just like veg momos, different types of momos can be prepared with different stuffings. There are a variety of momos recipes available in the market.

Mushroom Momos Recipe
- Take mushrooms in desired quantity and rinse them well after removing the stem.
- Put some oil in a pan and after the oil gets heated, add finely chopped ginger and garlic.
- Add finely chopped onion to the pan and saute it well. Add a pinch of salt to it and saute it until the onion turns golden brown.
- Now add chopped mushroom to the pan and cook it until it is tender.
- Add garam masala, coriander powder, green chili, and soy sauce to the mixture and stir it well for a few minutes.
- Leave the mixture to cool down for a few minutes, and then use it to prepare momos.
Cheese Momos Recipe
- Take the desired amount of cheese and grate it in a bowl.
- Add finely chopped onion, capsicum, coriander leaves, salt, pepper, herbs, and chili powder to the mixture.
- You don’t need to cook the mixture. Your stuffing is ready.
- Add salt to your state and use the stuffing to prepare your delicious cheese momos.
Pan-Fried Momos Recipe
- Soak 2 large red chilies in 1 tablespoon of vinegar and grind it to make a paste.
- Heat a couple of tablespoons of oil in a pan, add chopped ginger and garlic, and saute it well.
- Add finely chopped onion and once the onion turns golden brown, add cabbage, capsicum, and carrot to the pan.
- After cooking the vegetables for a few minutes, add a pinch of salt and black pepper.
- Allow the mixture to cool down, and your stuffing is prepared. However, that’s not it.
- Steam the momos well, put a pan on another burner and add a tablespoon of oil.
- Add chopped garlic and onion to the pan and saute it for 30 seconds. After the garlic and onion are gently cooked, add steamed momos to the mixture and saute them for 1 minute. Meanwhile, add the paste of dry red chilies and vinegar, soya sauce, and tomato ketchup. Add some water if you want some gravy.
- Mix all of the ingredients well, and your pan-fried momos are ready.

Chocolate Momos Recipe
Chocolate momos are getting really popular in the metros, and you can try them for a change.
- After preparing the dough, stuff the discs made of dough with finely chopped chocolate. You can use some water to seal the corners of the disc.
- Steam the momos in a steamer for 5 to 8 minutes and serve them after topping them with chocolate syrup.
