The amazing Kaziranga National Park has a vibrant history too! The history of the Park dates back to 1904, when Lord Curzon, once the Viceroy of India, went on an excursion along with his spouse in this region. On their trip, Mary Curzon was surprised to see no signs of rhinos. Then Mary persuaded his husband to take some measures to safeguard the one-horned rhinoceros, or they will be extinct soon. As a result, in 1905, an area of Kaziranga of about 232sq kilometers was declared a Proposed Forest Reserve. In 1908, the area of 152sq kilometers was added in the 232sq kilometers. Then the whole area was declared as a Kaziranga Reserve Forest.

After 8 years, i.e., in 1916, the area was renamed Kaziranga Game Sanctuary. Then again, in the year 1950, it was renamed Kaziranga Wildlife Sanctuary, and till 1968 it wasn’t designated as Kaziranga National Park. When the area expanded to 430sq kilometers in 1968, it was named Kaziranga National Park. The Park got its recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage site in the year 1985.

Despite the fact that Kaziranga is one of the homes to the largest population of one-horned rhinoceros, the Park comprises a variety of fauna. From wild buffaloes, swamp deer to Royal Bengal Tigers and Asian Elephants can be found easily in the Kaziranga National Park. The Park is also the home to almost more than 30 mammalian species, out of which 15 species have come under the threatened category. The Park is also rich in the population of avifauna. It is better to visit the Kaziranga National Park somewhere in between the months of November and April. For the safety measures, the perk is closed before the arrival of monsoons. Also, the elephant and jeep safaris are available only from 1st November to 30th April. So, to get full-fledged fun and a glimpse of the Park, it is better to visit the Park between November to April.
