According to a new global assessment released by UN Women and UNDP today at the Women Deliver Conference, no nation has fully achieved gender parity and less than 1% of women and girls live in a country with high levels of women’s empowerment and a small gender gap. The study presents a more complete picture of advancements in women’s and girls’ human development for the first time.

The research proposes the Global Gender Parity Index (GGPI) and the Women’s Empowerment Index (WEI) as the twin indices for assessing gender parity and women’s empowerment.

The twin indexes provide various but complimentary perspectives for evaluating advancements in women’s human development, power, and freedoms. Together, they illuminate the intricate issues that affect women all around the world and open the door for focused interventions and legislative

Women’s ability to make decisions and exercise their freedom to take advantage of opportunities is still mainly constrained, according to a study of 114 nations. Large gender inequalities and low levels of women’s empowerment are frequent.

The WEI assesses five factors—health, education, inclusion, decision-making, and violence against women—to determine how empowered and free women are to take advantage of opportunities and make decisions in their lives. Similar to this, the GGPI assesses how women compare to men in key areas of human development, such as inclusion, health, and decision-making.

According to the WEI, women are only enabled to realize, on average, 60% of their potential globally. According to the GPPI, they achieve on average 72% of what men do across important human development parameters, showing a gender difference of 28%. These shortages and inequities in women’s empowerment undermine not just their growth but also the advancement of humanity.

However, these new indices make it abundantly evident that across all nations, women’s full potential is still untapped, and wide gender inequalities remain the norm, which is impeding and delaying progress toward the achievement of all the Goals. To fulfill the promise of gender equality, protect women’s and girls’ human rights, and guarantee that their fundamental freedoms are fully realized, sustained efforts are consequently required, she concluded.

Less than 1% of women and girls live in nations with high levels of women’s empowerment and gender parity, according to the report, while the majority of women and girls worldwide—3.1 billion women and girls—live in nations with large gender gaps and low levels of women’s empowerment.
