According to a Niti Aayog report released on Monday, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh saw the fastest decline in the number of people living in multidimensional poverty, It is characterized by having subpar living, educational, and health conditions.

Between 2015–16 and 2019–21, an estimated 135 million Indians are anticipated to have emerged from multidimensional poverty; according to a Niti Aayog analysis, 56.8 million of them reside in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh (UP). Multidimensional poverty is a composite indicator that takes into account elements outside financial resources, such as living conditions, health, and education.

Urban regions showed a fall in poverty from 8.65 to 5.27 percent, while rural areas had the fastest decline, from 32.59 to 19.28 percent.

The research included estimates of multidimensional poverty for the 707 administrative districts and the 36 states and Union Territories, noting that Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and Rajasthan had the fastest declines in the proportion of multidimensional poor people.

After the MPI value decreased from 0.117 to 0.066 and the severity of poverty dropped from 47% to 44% over the five years, India is already on the path to achieving SDG target 1.2 (of decreasing multidimensional poverty by at least half) significantly earlier than the specified timeframe.

According to Niti Aayog, tremendous progress has been made in these sectors as a result of the government’s relentless focus on enhancing access to sanitation, nutrition, cooking fuel, financial inclusion, drinking water, and power.

It went on to say that reductions in poverty were mostly a result of advances in cleanliness, cooking fuel, and years of schooling.
