The city of Hyderabad is known for its Charminar, the most prominent landmark in the heart of the city. The monument was created by Quli Qutub Shah to honour the founding of Hyderabad. The spectacular structure is made up of two enormous courtyards and a lavish dining room called “Khilawat.” This magnificent structure still has some of its former splendour and was formerly the official residence of the Nizams of Hyderabad. The Nizam’s heir, Barkat Ali Khan Mukarram Jah, still owns it, and in 2010 UNESCO honoured it with the Asia Pacific Merit Prize.
