The decision to offer free medical care at government-run hospitals was made at a cabinet meeting presided over by Tanaji Sawant, the minister of health for Maharashtra.
Tanaji Sawant, the health minister for Maharashtra, stated on Thursday that all procedures in public hospitals will be free of charge, with the state covering all associated costs.
He stated that the decision was made today during the cabinet meeting.
The Maharashtra Government has decided to make treatment free in Primary Health Centers, Rural Hospitals, Women’s Hospitals, District General Hospitals, Upazila Hospitals, Super Specialty Hospitals, and Cancer Hospitals.
“The government will cover the full cost of all treatments in government hospitals. Today’s cabinet meeting resulted in a decision, according to Sawant, according to news agency ANI.
According to the information, the decision was made following Article 21 of the Constitution, which ensures that all individuals have a right to health.
In a given year, all of Maharashtra’s government hospitals get about 2.55 crore patients. Patients will receive free care at each of the state’s 2,418 facilities that fall under the Public Health Department.
Service Commissioner Dhiraj Kumar, Health Services Director Dr. Swapnil Lale, law and Justice Department Joint Secretary Ashok Atram, Social Welfare Department Founder President Yogesh Malkhare.
Other officers from the Home Department and the Health Department also attended the aforementioned cabinet meeting, which was presided over by Health Minister Sawant.
Before that, in 2020, Maharashtra became the first state to provide free and cashless insurance coverage to its citizens during the Covid epidemic.

The Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY), a health program run by the state government, was announced by Rajesh Tope, who was the state health minister at the time.
To apply for the program, a ration card and a residence certificate are now required documentation.
