In Hindu mythology, Deeg located along Krishna’s parikrama route, which began at Goverdhan, 14 kilometers (8.7 miles) from Deeg. Some people believe it is the ancient town of “Dirgha” or “Dirghapur,” described in the epic Skanda Purana. When Maharaja Badan Singh was declared monarch of the Sinsinwar Hindu Jat state of Bharatpur in 1722, Deeg was its initial capital. Maharaja Suraj Mal built the formidable fortification of Deeg around 1730. Deeg became the second capital of the kings of the Bharatpur princely state when Suraj Mal relocated the capital to Bharatpur. It is famous for its forts, castles, gardens, and fountains.

Deeg in Rajasthan was formerly a summer retreat for the kings of Bharatpur, with its massive fort, exquisite pleasure gardens, and gorgeous markets. The Jats attempted to establish their empire there until the Mughals captured the crown. Even though the local monarchs were able to reclaim the kingdom from the Mughals after a protracted war, Deeg fell into the hands of foreigners once more – this time the British colonial overlords. Deeg did not get much-needed freedom until the nineteenth century.

A Jat ruler built the fort in the 18th century, and King Surajmal subsequently repaired it. Because of its nice ambiance, it was a summer retreat for the Bharatpur monarchs. It was built in the shape of a 274-meter-square and is still surrounded by a large pool of water. It has 20-meter-high walls and an entrance from the north. The fort’s entrance leads to a sumptuous structure where the royals dwelt. There are canons on surrounding hills, but the fort is nearly in ruins.

The fort’s 500 fountains are its most enthralling feature. Previously, an above tank was replenished by bullocks who brought water in leather buckets via special chutes. When the tank was full, the personnel would unlock the sluices and allow the water to pour through the fountainheads.

Gopal Bhawan, Kishan Bhawan, Suraj Bhawan, Nand Bhawan, Keshav Bhawan, and Hardev Bhawan are the six residences in Deeg Palace.

The true abode of the monarch was Gopal Bhawan in the fort’s royal structure. The fort also includes Mughal elements in its construction, such as the Char Bagh, indicating that Mughal soldiers captured it.
