Christians throughout the world mark Good Friday as a day to remember Jesus Christ’s crucifixion. A significant occasion in the Christian religion, the day is marked on the Friday before Easter Sunday.

For Christians, Jesus Christ’s death on the cross stands in for the greatest atonement offered to atone for sin. It is thought that Christ’s death provided a means for believers to obtain eternal life by atoning for humanity’s sins. Because of Jesus’ supreme sacrifice, which paved the path for salvation and peace between God and humanity, the day is seen as “good.”

The Bible claims that on this day, Jesus was taken before the Romans for judgment by the Jewish religious authorities who had condemned him to death for claiming to be the son of God and ruler of the Jews. Jesus endured brutal torture before his execution and had to drag a hefty wooden cross through a jeering mob. Finally, Jesus’ wrists and feet were nailed to the cross, where he later perished.

Observance of Good Friday:

Christians observe Good Friday solemnly to honor the way Jesus Christ underwent tremendous suffering and died for the expiation of their sins.

This may involve attending a service where the account of Jesus’s agonizing crucifixion is recounted. Some believers may even choose to fast as a way of expressing their grief. Christians mark Good Friday solemnly in remembrance of the extreme suffering and death that Jesus experienced to atone for their sins. This can entail going to a ceremony where the story of Jesus’ torturous crucifixion is told.

Good Friday, a Christian event that happens on the Friday before Easter, commemorates Jesus’ execution and death at Calvary. In the Christian calendar, this day is also known as Great Friday, Great and Holy Friday, and Black Friday.

We commemorate Jesus’ willing suffering and death by crucifixion as the final atonement for our sins on Good Friday. (1 John 1:10). It is followed by Easter, a joyful celebration of the day that Jesus rose from the dead, declaring his victory over sin and death and indicating a coming resurrection for everyone who is connected to him through faith. (Romans 6:5).

What Does “Good” Friday Mean?

But why “Good Friday” rather than “Bad Friday” or another comparable term for the day of Jesus’ death? This is how some Christian traditions operate; in German, for instance, the day is known as Karfreitag, or “Sorrowful Friday.” Some claim that the ancient moniker “God’s Friday” is where the English word “good” got its start.

Similar to this, Good Friday is “good” because, despite how horrible that day was, we needed to experience Easter’s pleasure. For forgiveness and redemption to be offered to the world, God’s anger against sin had to be poured out on Jesus, the ideal animal sacrifice. God could not be “just and the justifier” of people who put their trust in Jesus without that terrible day of anguish, sorrow, and bloodshed at the cross. (Romans 3:26). Ironically, God’s beautifully good plan to free the world from slavery was put to death on the day that appeared to be the biggest victory for evil.
