It is believed that the Gods, in their great wisdom, balanced the dreadful Indian summer against a heap of mangoes. Mango sweetness increases with summertime heat!

Mangoes are considered to be the summer’s pinnacle experience every year. Fresh mangoes are used as an ingredient in Aam Panna, milkshakes, jalebis, crepes, pancakes, and ice cream. It is impossible to describe the pure satisfaction of buying sweet, aromatic Alphonso, biting into a delectable Langa, and sucking on a Chausa.

 Undoubtedly, we won’t look as nice as Katrina Kaif enjoying a piece of mango for a slice advertisement but as we indulge in our beloved fruit, we undoubtedly experience the overflowing delight. 

Mango haters, who think mangoes are overrated, are just as numerous as mango enthusiasts. But the real question is: Are they overrated at all? 

Here are some interesting facts about the fruit that reigns supreme in the summertime. 

 5,000 years ago, India was the first place to cultivate mangoes.

The wild mango is believed to have its origins in the Indian and Burmese Himalayan foothills. Around 5,000 years ago, southern India, Myanmar, and the Andaman Islands are where the fruit was first known to be cultivated.

The oldest known mango tree

The oldest known mango tree is located in East Khandesh in Central India and is considered to be 300 years old. Unexpectedly, the old plant still produces fruit!

India is the largest mango producer in the world.

Over 18 million tonnes of fruit are produced in the South Asian nation, primarily for local consumption.

The largest mango in the world was longer than a ruler.

The biggest mango ever recorded, according to Guinness World Records, weighed 3.435 kg and had the following dimensions: 30.48 cm in length, 49.53 cm in diameter, and 17.78 cm in breadth. The whopper was taken in 2009 from a tree in the front garden of Sergio and Maria Socorro Bodiongan in the Philippines.

Mangoes and cashews and pistachios are relatives.

Mangos are drupes, which are fleshy fruits with thin skin and a big, pithy stone in the center called an endocarp that houses the fruit’s seed. In addition to being drupes, which include olives, dates, and cherries, cashews, and pistachios are also drupes, making them distant relatives of mango despite how nutty they seem.

For Buddhists, the mango tree is a sacred one.

Buddha allegedly pondered and napped among other monks in the serene serenity of dense mango orchards. The mango tree is therefore revered as a sacred tree by Buddhists.

Mangoes were introduced to America in the early 20th Century

At the start of the 20th century, David Fairchild, an agricultural explorer for the US government, was in India when he made the mango discovery. According to legend, he attempted to carry 1,000 mangoes back to his country, but the boat’s captain refused because they were too heavy. He found a solution by paying some neighborhood kids to consume the entire fruit in a short period, leaving just the stones for transporting. In South Florida, several of Fairchild’s original kinds are still in existence.
