Nueng, the son of a mafia boss, has spent his entire childhood alone because of his father’s job. But, his father is assassinated one day, and Nueng is forced to take up the reins in his stead. Palm, an elderly rural person, is appointed by his mother to be his bodyguard and defend him from hazards both inside and outside of school. But one person wants Nueng dead: his uncle, who wants to be the next Mafia leader. Can Palm be able to keep Nueng safe from the perils brought by his uncle as the two grow in love?
Nuengdiao Kiattrakulmethee, seventeen, is forced to flee with his adolescent bodyguard when his mother is killed by the thugs of his cunning uncle Suphakit, who wants to take over the family company. This comes just a few months after his father was assassinated. Will the two young people survive and find true love?
The Thai series “Never Let Me Go,” directed by Jojo Tichakorn Phukhaotong, starring Phuwin Tangsakyuen as Nuengdiao and Pond Naravit Lertratkosum as Palm.
Nuengdiao is a wealthy loner who is constantly on guard, suspecting that everyone who approaches him has an ulterior agenda. He is especially frightened of his astute uncle Suphakit (Nat Sakdatorn) and his homicidal intentions. Nuengdiao’s mother enrolls Pond, the adolescent son of her devoted worker, in the same school as Nuengdiao to safeguard her son.
The plot revolves around social inequalities and an unusual romance between two people from different backgrounds. Previously, Phuwin and Pond co-starred in the romantic comedy ‘Fish Upon The Sky,’ which had some humorous moments, and the two were lovely as college students. They portray high-school lads in ‘Never Let Me Go,’ but the tale would have worked better if their characters were in college. Two youngsters are subjected to false expectations in the storyline. For example, Nuengdiao and Palm have been on the run for weeks, but when things become too risky, Palm returns to his luxurious house and employs a bunch of bodyguards. This may have happened earlier in the plot.
Because of its narrative and artistically stunning settings, ‘Never Let Me Go’ is visually captivating. Several episodes take place on less-explored beaches in Thailand, offering a magnificent setting for the characters’ blossoming romance. Phuwin depicts Nuengdiao with heart, vividly expressing his character’s social isolation at school and in life in general. Thanya, played by Organ Rasee Wacharapolmek, is his mother, and the two have a happy, healthy connection.
In Episode 5, Thanya tells Nueng something along the lines of “You may like anybody or anything you choose. Your satisfaction is more important than the prestige of our family.” It’s one of the most endearing parent-child interactions in an Asian series.

While Phuwin and Pond have excellent chemistry, Pond falls short when his character, Palm, is supposed to communicate emotionally intense situations. Pond struggles to let go of his inhibitions in some sequences, and his difficulty to handle stronger emotions is shown when he co-stars with Superstar Tanapon Sukumpantanasan. Perth portrays Chopper, Nuengdiao’s first cousin and classmate, who steals the spotlight from Pond in key sequences.
Chimon Wachirawit Ruangwiwat, who portrays their classmate Ben, is also a wonderful supporting actor. Nat Sakdatorn plays Suphakit nonchalantly wicked and does a good job of playing the ‘bitter young brother’ part. ‘Never Let Me Go’ might have been a lot more riveting with improved writing and editing. Yet, the cinematography, characters, and well-chosen background music make it worthwhile to see.
