Many Americans are returned to New York on a flight from the Caribbean. Only, it vanishes for five years while traveling. When the jet does arrive, authorities redirect it to another airport where the passengers undergo DNA testing and medical inspections to confirm that they are indeed the same individuals and are the same age as when they departed.

To learn more about their whereabouts, officials question them. Despite the unexplained time gap, the manifest reveals that everyone is the same age as when they left, leading to their ultimate release by the authorities.

Unsurprisingly, a lot of couples, families, and friends grieved before moving on. Life becomes challenging.

Ben Stone (Josh Dallas), his son Cal Stone, and their siblings Michaela Stone (Melissa Roxburgh) and Ben Stone are the main characters (Jack Messina).

Michaela expected her lover, Jared Vasquez (J R Ramirez), to propose when she got home, but he’s already married. Ben’s devoted union with Grace (Athena Karkanis), is then upended by his disappearance and eventual reappearance. In the end, Grace covers up because she is so happy to have her son Cal back. Soap opera begins.

The story

Manifest begins as a mixture of drama and soap opera because of all the relationships it disrupts. It quickly becomes clear that passengers do, in fact, encounter psychic occurrences. And in light of that, the cat truly is among the pigeons. Or the guard dogs, but whatever.

Michaela, a police officer, is rehired after her departure. Although her visions and auditory messages are cryptic, disobeying these psychic orders results in excruciating headaches. Despite having the appearance of a rogue cop, she actually solves crimes and aids people. Without reliable sources or thorough investigation, suspicion is placed on her.

Thus, it starts.

Diversity

Throughout the three seasons, white characters like Michaela and Ben look to faiths and artifacts from ancient civilizations like Egypt for guidance. However, when they discover Christian solutions, two Indian women, Saanvi Bahl (Parveen Kaur) and Dr. Aria Gupta (Mahira Kakkar), are ecstatic.

While the Egyptian-based “discovery” instills survivors with a terror that all must conform, one failure will cause all to die together, the Christian thread grows stronger, gradually overpowering the plot.

As a result, the plot focuses on controlling behaviors, fear-based drives, and polarising factions. Manifest essentially follows storylines that are similar to those of The 4400 and several other TV shows.

It appears that Manifest was self-conscious (self-righteous?) about its choice of a diverse cast as the Christian strand began to take center stage, especially after a portion of Noah’s Ark made an appearance.

It appears that the show’s creators and writers thought that the diverse cast provided them license to favor Christianity and perhaps even religious intolerance.

They end up contradicting themselves when they utilize the Egyptian tale to support a “one sinner, all burn” conclusion. And while avoiding giving you my theological exposition, as a recent graduate of a Bible college, I cast very critical glances at you.

Shark jumping

Although the first two seasons of this B-grade television series are rather strong and entertaining, the third season was a complete disaster. The TV show Happy Days were referred to as having “jumped the shark” since it ran for an excessive amount of time.

In one episode, Fonzie waterskidded and leaped a shark while wearing a leather jacket, portending weaker stories and an overall decline in the quality of the show. For season three, Manifest not only “jumped the shark,” but also failed miserably.

The series was flushed out in S03E06, and things only got worse. A character who has dislocated their shoulder is imprisoned on a ledge in this episode.

The guy at the top of the cliff should run off, save those in danger, then come back with assistance to save the person with the dislocated shoulder since other characters are in immediate danger. Right? Evidently, the authors didn’t think of it that way.

As a result, we have the inescapable statement that “those other individuals are in immediate danger, but I’m going to climb down the cliff then help the person with the dislocated shoulder climb up the cliff.” The “I’m going to reposition the shoulder THEN, LATER, AFTER hiking up the cliff” cliche. Then it only gets funnier from there.

Drinking Contest

Manifest had a better beginning, but after season 2 and the beginning of season 3, the storyline became primarily Christian. However, they do it to support a message that says “everyone does the right thing or, if one person doesn’t, we all perish.” The “lifeboat” is the term used for the “safe” area.

Viewers can play an optional drinking game using numerous keywords after that phrase is used just once. The issue is that drinking coffee increases your risk of having a heart attack. You run the risk of poisoning yourself with alcohol if you drink. As it was, I believed that these essential words were INDEPENDENTLY KILLING MY BRAIN CELLS.

The result

Considering the “back from the dead” premise of the series, the first two seasons of Manifest were entertaining B-grade stories with solid acting, believable character growth, and developing relationships. They were enjoyable.
