UNPAUSED- A REVIEW

Unpaused: Naya Safar, like the first Unpaused (2020), revolves around protagonists who face challenges and uncertainties as a result of the outbreak of a novel coronavirus. Unlike the previous instalment, where the stories were only limited to the area of Mumbai, the stories this time are expanding to include Uttar Pradesh and New Delhi.

‘The Couple,’ one of the five anthologies directed by Nupur Asthana, revolves around the lives of Akriti played by Shreya Dhanwanthary and Dippy played by Priyanshu Painyuli, a couple who is working from home in the time period  of the Covid-19 outbreak. Things in their life take a turn for the worse when Akriti is laid off due to cost-cutting measures at her workplace. Nupur, who also co-wrote the screenplay and dialogues with Samina Motlekar for this bittersweet love story, has beautifully addressed and portrayed how it affects the relationship of this cute couple and how they deal with it.

The other anthology in Unpaused: Ek Naya Safar, revolves around the life of Sangeeta Waghmare played by very talented Geetanjali Kulkarni who has been portrayed as a widow living alone and is a teacher and works in a Covid war room in Ayyapa KM. A phone call from one of the relatives of a patient brings back all the painful memories of her son’s death and at the very same time seeing the person responsible for his death got released from prison, even if only temporarily.

This story just like the previous one, is relatable, and we may react in a similar way if we were in Sangeeta’s shoes.

Ruchir Arun’s ‘Teen Tigaadaa’ is about a trio who has stolen a shipment of consumer goods for one NalliSwamy and is forced to wait in a rundown factory until lockdown restrictions are lifted following the second wave of Covid and their loot can be sold. Chandan (Saqib Saleem) needs to close the deal so he can visit his pregnant wife Supriya, while Ajeet (Sam Mohan) wants to repay his father’s debt.

Another one is Ruchir Arun’s ‘Teen Tigaadaa’ is about a trio who has stolen a shipment of consumer goods for one NalliSwamy and is forced to wait in a rundown factory until the lockdown restrictions are lifted following the second wave of Covid-19 and their loot can be sold. And all Dimple (Ashish Verma) wants while they’re cooped up is some samosas, if not a decent meal, instead of the noodles and biscuits kept on hand. The crux of the story is how they stay together despite so many differences and squabbles.

The next story of Unpaused is of the writer-director  Shikha Makan’s ‘Gond Ke Laddoo,’  in which Neena Kulkarni plays the role of Sushila Tripathi, a grandmother who wishes to see her newborn granddaughter in New Delhi. However, due to the Covid surge, her daughter Ritu insists that she should remain at home in Uttar Pradesh until it becomes safe for her to leave. This story reminds us of some of our elderly relatives who are opposed to using smartphones or conducting mobile transactions.

Shikha has very well crafted a sweet story about a secret recipe of a mother saving the day for a stranger courier guy Rohan (Lakshvir Saran), who goes out of his way to deliver her parcel for her daughter, with significant assistance from his wife Geetanjali (Darshana Rajendra). This story teaches the importance of not giving up even when you lost everything, a ray of hope can be yours anytime.

The final episode of the series, Unpaused is Nagraj Manjule’s ‘Vaikunth,’ which, as the title suggests, takes place mostly in a crematorium. Vikas Chavan (Nagraj) works at the crematorium and wants his son to work hard in order to achieve some level of success in his life. His fear that an ambulance might drive it away from the Janhit Hospital, where his father is being treated for Covid, immediately strikes a chord, reminding us of our own worries and worse fears about our loved ones in the crucial times of pandemic.

The scenes in which people do not attend or do not want to perform the last rites of their kin who have died as a result of the coronavirus reflect the times we have lived through.

All five stories have one thing in common: they’re all relatable, and we’re sure we’ve thought something similar to one or more of the protagonists in similar situations. The actors deserve credit as well for successfully eliciting emotions that resonate with the audience. Not only is their treatment genuine, but so is the setting is chosen by the five directors for their stories, which also hits a nerve.

In a nutshell, Unpaused: Ek Naya Safar portrays the stories that proves to be relatable with the viewers and has the capability to keep you stuck from the very beginning till its end.
