The changing of seasons provides an opportunity for a substantial hair refresh, from striking color changes to short chops.

After a hot and sweaty summer, we can look forward to falling as a chance to start experimenting with our hair again without fear of the inevitable humidity floof. With a break from the heat and (very necessary) summer up-dos, the new season ushers in some much-needed variety and more layered fashion and hair.

Alessandra Bruno, a stylist at New York City’s Fekkai Salon, says she’s already noticing a shift in the air when it comes to fall hair trends. She’s seen that even people who have loved their long hair all summer are preparing for a significant shift.

More shoulder-grazing haircuts with internal layers for movement and mid-length cuts, she forecasts. Face-framing is very popular right now, she says. This can take the form of strategically placed layers or even bangs.

Some fall trends appear to return year after year, from fresh lowlights to long, soft layers. However, fall 2022 hair trends appear to be all about going further than you’ve ever gone before. According to Emily Claire, master colorist at Rob Peetoom Salon in Williamsburg, this is an opportunity to try a color you’ve always wanted to try but never had the courage to.

Everyone’s favorite color is usually red. Claire inquires, “Did you see Kendall Jenner‘s red hair earlier this year?”. ‘We’ll see a lot more of it, especially for brunettes,’ she predicts.

As the leaves fall away, so go our inhibitions about our hair. Read on for the top five hairstyles for fall 2022 that will have you feeling like a new person in time for the new season.

THE BOYFRIEND BOB OF THE ’90s

According to Adriana Papaleo, master stylist at Rob Peetoom, the bob is returning for fall and in a variety of different forms. “You may go shorter with a soft line at the jaw” for a more androgynous ’90s appearance, she explains, or “reduce the length to the shoulder” to preserve some length.

“The bob is fantastic for thicker hair,” Papaleo continues, “and the styling variety keeps it fresh.” In other words, there’s a bob for everyone this fall, and we can anticipate seeing more shoulder-length or shorter hair (bobbing) floating around.

ROMANTIC REDs

THE BIG CHOP

Doja Cat recently shaved her head, and you can too. While you may not be ready for such a drastic change, Alessandra Bruno believes we should all explore wearing our hair shorter this fall. Short hair is exciting and vibrant, it’s versatile, and it can require less styling depending on your hair structure, she notes

After all, “summer may be tough on your hair, so fall is the best time for a large trim and getting your hair back in shape.” A fresh start? Please, yes. Consider following Florence Pugh’s example and starting with a layered pixie-mullet.

MYSTERIOUS BRUNETTES

Last winter, a number of celebrity blondes, like Hailey Bieber, returned to their natural brown roots. This trend, according to Krystel Cuadra, a colorist at Fekkai Salon, will begin even earlier this season.” After months in the heat, people want to change their overly lightened and oxidized locks,” she explains.

This fall, we’ll see people wearing their natural hair colors with a few strategically placed highlights. Brunettes should darken their hair or use tone-on-tone lowlights to give dimension. The resulting colors will be unique to you, whether they are cold mushrooms or tawny chestnuts. The super-dimensional color exudes mystery.

If you can’t stomach the thought of losing all of your lengths, try a short, choppy fringe like Bella Hadid. Long bangs make the most of the hair you have by attracting attention to the eyes and framing your entire look. If you keep the layers long, you may always brush your new bangs to the side for further versatility.
