The Weekend Away, directed by Kim Farrant and based on Sarah Alderson’s best-selling mystery novel of the same name, follows Beth and her best friend Kate (Christina Wolfe) on a ladies’ vacation to Croatia.
Beth, exhausted from being a new mother, decides to drink with Kate. Still, things go awry when Beth wakes up and has no recollection of the previous night.
To make matters worse, her companion goes missing and is discovered dead after a frantic search. Beth is named the prime suspect, which is tough to defend given that she has just a hazy recall of the night out.
She tries to go on the run with the aid of a local taxi driver named Zain (Ziad Bakri) to find out what happened to her companion. However, her efforts to discover the truth reveal a heartbreaking secret and Beth’s world is flipped upside down. Is she guilty of murdering her closest buddy, or is this all a ruse?
Is it worth watching The Weekend Away?
I’ll be the first to confess that some of Netflix’s thrillers have been of poor quality. Does anyone have a secret obsession? That movie has so many holes in it that you could filter wheat through it!
They have, however, stepped up their game, and The Weekend Away is a good example of selecting all of the proper components to produce a decent thrill that is well worth seeing.
It has everything — an annual weekend vacation with the girls, a lady accused of murdering her best friend, tragic secrets, a stunning setting (Croatia), and the wonderful Leighton Meester on the run attempting to figure out what happened!
It helps a lot since it is based on a best-selling novel by Sarah Alderson, who also created the script. Though I should tell out that there are a few modifications, not the least of which is that the main character is called Beth rather than Orla as she is in the original noveL.
Orla, a new mother, has left her infant girl with her husband Rob as she travels from London to Lisbon for a long weekend with her close friend and old roommate, Kate.
Kate and Orla settle into their Airbnb and get ready for a night out on the town. Kate answers a phone call from her ex-husband, Toby, and is overcome with emotion. Kate recommends that they go to a neighbourhood pub after supper. Orla is tired, but she agrees. Orla is taken aback when Kate does some coke on the way to the pub. They meet two handsome young guys at the pub and all drink a lot. Kate invites the boys back to their vacation home.
Orla opens Kate’s phone and examines her texts and voicemails, realising that her husband Rob has been sleeping with Kate for years. He had urged Kate not to inform Orla about their romance before the trip. Orla believes that if she informs the cops about the affair, she will become the prime suspect.

The police are suspicious of Orla and remove her passport after speaking with the landlord about the argument he overheard when Kate died. She chooses to conduct more research on her own. Toby, Kate’s ex-husband, has an alibi. Still, Orla discovers that her husband Rob left their baby with a babysitter and travelled to Lisbon the night Kate died. What was he doing there, and why was he not telling her? Rob admits to the romance but denies any involvement in Kate’s death.
The police inform Orla that Konstandin is a member of the Albanian mafia. They are also aware of Kate and Rob’s affair. Orla is perplexed by this and finds that her landlord has been spying on all of his tenants. His “recording studio” is crammed with monitors. She confronts him and threatens to inform the police. He shows her the video from the night Kate died, in which she chases the escorts out of the apartment after realising they took her purse.
Orla and Konstandin encounter a cab driver who claims to have taken Kate to the police station to report the theft. Orla has been arrested in connection with Kate’s murder. She informs the cops about the landlord’s espionage and that Kate was at the police station just before her death. Orla questions Nunes, one of the police officers, about why he keeps the information that Kate was at the police station just before she died. Nunes claims he simply volunteered to drive Kate home from the station (her money had been stolen) before hitting her. He assaults Orla when she accuses him of murdering Kate.
EPILOGUE – LAST-MINUTE PLOT CHANGE IN THE WEEKEND AWAY
Officer Nunes is apprehended as Kate’s killer, and Orla is permitted to return to London. Orla and Rob are no longer together. Orla goes to Rob’s house to give him their daughter for his planned visitation. She receives a video from Konstandin after waving farewell. He recently discovered surveillance footage of Kate’s murder. In the video, Kate argues with a man, who suddenly punches her and rolls her into the river. Orla identifies the man who murdered Kate when she views the film.
